Electric Railway Museum open day

Many of our readers will be aware of our sister unit, the Wirral Class 503 EMU, part of the SERA fleet, which has been housed at the Electric Railway Museum (formerly Coventry Railway Centre) for many years.

Unfortunately, as we reported back in July, the museum site is to be closed and cleared. The collection will be scattered to various sites across the country.

The final open day at the site was held on 8th October, which was the last opportunity to see the museum’s collection of electric trains in one place. The event was well-attended, with over 1,000 people reportedly attending.

The 503 was positioned in a prime location, attracting much attention and admiration. The interior was not open to the public but it was possible to examine the exterior up close.

Also of interest to Merseyside railway enthusiasts is Liverpool Overhead Railway trailer car 7. Formerly housed at Steamport until that museum closed, it is one of only two LOR vehicles left in existence (the other is car 3, in the Museum of Liverpool). No. 7 is also expected to move to a new site soon.

The 503 is to move to a private site in the south of England. The crowdfunding campaign, to raise funds for the move of all SERA’s vehicles, is still ongoing at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/savethetrains.

We wish all involved with the Class 503 and the rest of the Electric Railway Museum all the best for their future endeavours.
